Accutane® Mental Health
Isotretinoin products, including Accutane®, have been linked to some mental illness problems, including depression, thoughts of suicide and suicidal actions. The connection is said to be because isotretinoin affects the way serotonin is produced in patients. Lack of serotonin has been linked to depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and aggression.

Accutane® and Mental Health
Having severe acne can affect a person's mental health, as it can affect one's self esteem and self worth. Accutane® was prescribed to patients dealing with the most severe cases of acne. For some, the medicine would have a positive effect on their mental health, as clearer skin could make a difference in their self-esteem and quality of life.
For others, however, the drug had the opposite affect. According to reports, some patients who take isotretinoin are at an increased risk of suffering from severe depression and suicidal thoughts or actions. While a direct correlation between suicide and isotretinoin has not been made, reports from studies suggest that the possibility exists.
One study, in particular, looked at 5,756 patients that were prescribed Accutane® between 1980 and 1990. Patients were between 15 and 49 years old. The findings showed that 128 of the patients were admitted to a hospital for attempted suicide on one or more occasions. Of those, 24 committed suicide.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded that people who take Accutane® or another isotretinoin-containing product might be at risk of deep depression and suicidal thoughts or actions up to one year after taking the medicine.
