Accutane® and Suicide

Accutane® suicides have been reported in patients since 1982. Over the years it has become more difficult to receive Accutane® due to its link to birth defects and fetal death as well as the instances of Accutane® suicide. Congressman Bart Stupak has been particularly involved in the fight against Accutane®'s availability. Stupak had a direct experience with an Accutane® suicide when his grandson committed suicide while taking the acne medication.
Parents and families have voiced their concerns regarding the possible occurrence of Accutane® suicide. Witnessing changes in behavior including depression and psychotic symptoms, parents fear the acne medication triggers Accutane® suicides. Although the manufacturer has maintained Accutane® suicides do not occur, the FDA has tried to more strictly regulate Accutane®.
