Energy medicine

The National Institutes of Health recognize two types of energy medicine: veritable energy medicine and putative energy medicine. The former involves energy types which can be measured, whereas, in the latter, the energy systems cannot be measured. Many forms of energy-related therapies, which have existed in various cultures for thousands of years, are putative forms of energy medicine.

Veritable energy medicine uses sound, visible light, magnetism, and monochromatic radiation to prevent and treat illness. There are many proven uses of veritable energy medicine. For example, electromagnetic fields are used in MRIs, pacemakers, and radiation. For centuries static magnets have been used to increase energy and relieve pain, with mixed results. For the last four decades, pulsating electromagnetic therapy has been used to treat patients with sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, migraines, and osteoarthritis. Millimeter wave therapy, sound energy therapy, and light therapy have been used to treat a variety of ailments with success.

The concept behind putative energy medicine is that all life has energy systems which organize the physical components of our body and help to maintain total health and physical functioning of the body. The ancient Indians and Tibetans believed that the body has seven swirling centers of energy, called chakras, which are connected to 72,000 smaller fluid energy channels responsible for the condition of the mind, body, and spirit. In Ayurvedic medicine this energy is organized into doshas. The Chinese (who call energy "chi" or "qi") and Japanese (who call energy "ki") use energy medicine to facilitate healing and believe that health is the result of adequate energy flow and blood flow. Energy is also referred to as prana, fohat, orgone, odic force, mana, etheric energy, and homeopathic resonance.

Energy medicine believes that illness is the result of a blockage or deficiency in energy flow within the body. Treatment, therefore, is intended to remove the blockages and correct deficiencies, so that that energy is flowing freely again. This can be done in a number of ways. Energy medicine can include traditional Chinese medicine therapies of acupuncture , acupressure, cupping, moxibustion, and herbal medicine , all of which seek to correct imbalances in one's energy. Reiki and Johrei, both forms of energy medicine from Japanese, qigong (Chinese), and healing touch are also energy medicine therapies designed to restore proper energy flow to facilitate optimal health.

Some forms of putative energy have been better studied than others. For example, acupuncture is one of the most well studied forms of alternative medicine to which the western scientific method has been applied. Many forms of energy medicine have either not been well studied or do not conform well to western concepts of medicine. There are many forms of energy medicine that may provide health benefits. To learn more about these therapies, you may wish to speak with a trusted health care professional.
