Reiki is a form of Japanese energy medicine which is used to achieve stress reduction, relaxation, healing, and well-being. Reiki can be traced back thousands of years to its origins in Tibetan culture. Reiki therapies are based on the concept that all life possesses energy that connects us to ourselves (our health) and all other life. According to Reiki, when one's energy or life force is low, they are more susceptible to injury, illness, and negative conditions. This energy is often depleted or disrupted by physical and emotional stress.
Reiki treats the whole person including the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. A simple and natural form of healing, Reiki is a treatment that causes no harmful side effects and can be used by virtually anyone. While there is a spiritual component of Reiki, the practice is not religious and doesn't require belief in certain thought to receive benefit.
Reiki is actually a subtle form of energy, which practitioners believe flows through a practitioner's head out through their hands and body. During Reiki healing, a practitioner will place his or her hands on or near the patient and use a series of specific movements. Each movement or position is held for three to ten minutes depending on the patient's need. Reiki is done fully clothed usually on a massage table, or while sitting or standing. The patient becomes as relaxed as possible during Reiki healing. Some people report drifting into sleep or becoming increasingly relaxed. A Reiki treatment can usually last anywhere between 45 to 90 minutes.
Reiki is considered a form of putative energy medicine, meaning that the energy is not quantifiable. For this reason, the benefits of Reiki are difficult to discern through the scientific method. What western medicine can tell us is that most negative physical conditions are caused or aggravated by stress. When healing focuses on reduction of stress and promoting relaxation, many benefits can be achieved. Western science has also begun to discover evidence of the body's subtle energy forms and how these might be affected by certain external stimuli. For example, physics has found that introducing periodic energy into a chaotic energy system can actually elicit order within that system.
According to the International Center on Reiki Training, Reiki can have a positive and therapeutic effect on all forms of human illness from minor aches and pains to serious conditions like heart problems and cancer. Reiki can be beneficial for people who suffer from mental and emotional conditions as well. The side effects from traditional medical treatments and pharmaceutical drugs can also be relieved through Reiki. Reiki is usually used in conjunction with other treatments. If you suffer from a physical condition, it is important to seek medical attention in addition to seeking Reiki healing.
Reiki practitioners can be found through referrals, ads in magazines, local health food stores, and other health-conscious locations. It is a good idea to ask a Reiki teacher how long they've been practicing, what their treatment entails, and other pertinent questions before treatment. There are currently no government-implemented Reiki standards, though some organizations offer a licensing program.
