Avandia Drug

The drug Avandia is intended for diabetes patients and was made available in 1999. Over the years, Avandia has become one of the preferred drugs for treating Type 2 diabetes and has been prescribed to millions of Americans. However, Avandia is not a drug without risks. Documents dating as early as 2000 reveal a link between Avandia and heart failure and other heart problems.

The Controversy over Avandia 

Ever since a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2007 linked Avandia to an increased risk of heart attack, the drug has been the subject of much controversy. Some experts, including FDA scientist Dr. David Graham, are pushing for the popular diabetes drug to be pulled from the market and in July 2007, an FDA panel met to discuss the issue.

The Risk of Heart Failure

Less than a year after the FDA approved Avandia, diabetes expert Dr. John B. Buse wrote a letter to the agency citing concerns over the potential heart risks, especially heart failure, associated with the drug.

According to the FDA, more than 680 cases of heart failure have been linked to Avandia use. Heart failure is a potentially fatal condition, symptoms of which include loss of appetite, fatigue, shortness of breath or troubled breathing, and swelling in the ankles and feet.

Heart Attack Risk

Avandia's heart risks have been confirmed by both post-marketing reports and recent studies, including a meta-analysis of the drug's clinical trials that revealed a 43 percent increased risk of heart attack.
