Avandia®, Insulin and Type-2 Diabetes
(800) 722-0513
Produced by GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia® is an oral medication that can improve control of blood sugar levels in patients with type-2 diabetes. Although Avandia® may be used in conjunction with other medications, in most cases, doctors recommend not taking Avandia® and insulin together, as use of insulin with Avandia® can increase patients' risk of developing serious Avandia® side effects.
Complications associated with Avandia® and insulin use include:
- congestive heart failure
- heart attack
- liver toxicity
- severe allergic reaction
- stroke
Without emergency medical treatment, the above Avandia® side effects can be fatal.
Other Factors that Raise the Risk of Avandia® Side Effects
Taking insulin while on an Avandia® drug regimen is not the only way patients may have a higher risk of developing severe, potentially life threatening Avandia® side effects. Other factors that can increase Avandia® risks include:
- Drinking alcohol, as alcohol consumption affects blood sugar levels and can complicate the effectiveness of the Avandia® drug
- Having a history of heart problems, hypertension, liver disorders and/or stroke
- Taking other medications, including anti-seizure drugs, diuretics, asthma medications, thyroid drugs and/or contraceptive pills.
Important Information for Avandia® Insulin Patients
Due to the severity of possible Avandia® risks, it's crucial that patients thinking of taking both Avandia® and insulin therapy:
- Talk to their doctor about their complete medical history.
- Inform their doctor of any other vitamins, supplements and/or prescriptions they may currently be taking.
- Understand the symptoms of Avandia® side effects so they know when to seek emergency medical care.
Those who decide to start taking both Avandia® and insulin medicines should:
- Use both Avandia® and insulin doses only as directed.
- Get regular checkups with their doctors, who can monitor their health and find/treat Avandia® side effects in their early stages (The earlier severe Avandia® side effects are treated, the better chances Avandia® patients will survive and fully recover).
- Seek immediate medical attention should they start to develop the symptoms of Avandia®/insulin treatment complications.
