Avandia® Drug Recall
(800) 722-0513
Avandia®, an oral diabetes medication, has been the focus of two national FDA warnings due its potential of causing serious side effects. Although Avandia® can help control blood glucose levels for those with type-2 diabetes, this drug is also known to increase patients' risk of developing life-threatening injuries including:
- stroke
- bone fractures (especially in the fragile bones of the hands and feet)
- congestive heart failure
- heart attack
Given the life threatening nature of these Avandia® side effects, the FDA may soon issue a full-fledged Avandia® recall. To date, however, no such Avandia® recall has been issued to prescribers of this drug.
Factors that Increase the Risk of Avandia® Side Effects
Some patients will be more likely than others of developing severe Avandia® side effects. Those with the highest risk include patients with a history of:
- heart problems
- high blood pressure (hypertension)
- liver disease
- stroke
- vision problems related to diabetes
- blood clots and/or deep vein thrombosis (a condition in which blood clots impede proper circulation in the body's deep veins)
Patients taking any of the following medications will also have an elevated risk of developing serious Avandia® side effects:
- anticonvulsant medications
- asthma drugs
- contraceptive pills
- diet pills
- gemfibrozil (Gemcor)
- rifampin (Rifater, Rifadin, Rimactane)
- steroids
- thyroid medications
While the above-listed medications won't necessarily increase patients' risk of heart attack and stroke, they can cause individuals to develop:
- hyperglycemia (dangerously high blood glucose levels); or
- hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar levels)
Both of these conditions can be fatal if left untreated.
