Avandia® Treatment

(800) 722-0513

Generically known as rosiglitazone, Avandia® is an oral diabetes medication that makes insulin receptors more sensitive and, as a result, can improve control of blood sugar levels. Avandia® treatment of diabetes is only indicated for patients with type-2 diabetes (and NOT for those with type-1 diabetes).

Despite the fact that Avandia® drug treatment is primarily for type-2 diabetes, progressing clinical trials on this medication are testing whether Avandia® drug treatments can be applied to other conditions. Preliminary results show promise for using Avandia® in the treatment of:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • General inflammation
  • Psoriasis (a chronic skin condition marked by dry, itchy, scaly, flaky skin)
  • Ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammation and sores in the lining of the colon and/or rectum)

Although a range of conditions may improve following Avandia® treatments, this medication has been proven to raise patients' risk of developing some severe, potentially life threatening side effects.

Avandia® Treatment Failure: Serious Avandia® Side Effects

A 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that taking the Avandia® drug can increase the likelihood that patients develop:

  • stroke
  • congestive heart failure
  • heart attack
  • liver toxicity
  • severe allergic reaction

In one facet of this study, researchers found that patients were up to 43 percent more likely (than those using other diabetes medications) of suffering from an Avandia® heart attack.

Minimizing Risk of Avandia® Side Effects

To reduce their chances of developing potentially fatal Avandia® side effects, patients should do the following before starting an Avandia® drug regimen:

  • Discuss their complete medical history with their doctors.
  • Notify their doctors of all prescription medications, vitamins and/or supplements they are currently taking.
  • Be aware of the risk factors for and symptoms of Avandia® side effects.

Should a patient (with the help of his doctor) choose to start an Avandia® drug treatment, it's essential that the Avandia® patient:

  • Only take Avandia® as prescribed.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking an Avandia® drug treatment, as alcohol consumption can affect blood glucose levels and cause serious complications.
  • Get regular checkups to monitor his health and catch the signs of Avandia® side effects in their early stages (should they develop).

When Avandia® Treatments Fail

Patients will need immediate medical attention to prevent further, potentially fatal complications. The precise course of treatment will depend on the type and severity of a patient's particular Avandia® side effect.

Following all necessary treatments, injured Avandia® patients should then meet with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in Avandia® lawsuits. During this initial consultation, affected individuals can:

  • Learn whether they have a provable case against GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia®.
  • Find out more about the process of pursuing an Avandia® lawsuit.
  • Get information about facts of and settlements in cases similar to their own.
  • Determine whether they want to file an individual claim or join a class-action Avandia® lawsuit.

To encourage injured Avandia® patients to pursue their cases, most Avandia® lawyers offer free consultations and work on contingency, meaning no payment for legal services is due until a settlement is won.
