Baycol Lawsuit

There are a large number of Baycol lawsuits that have been filed against Bayer AG. Baycol was recalled in August 2001 after being linked to over 100 Baycol deaths, setting off huge legal woes for the company as Baycol lawsuits were filed in the thousands. Bayer had settled 888 Baycol lawsuits by June 10, 2003, with 9,400 Baycol lawsuits pending. There have been two Baycol lawsuit cases to go to court in the U.S. that Bayer won, however the company is still facing a growing number of Baycol lawsuits being filed.

The serious conditions linked to Baycol include rhabdomyolysis; a rare side effect of pharmaceutical drugs that causes muscle cells to break down and allows cell contents to enter the bloodstream. The number of Baycol lawsuits estimated to be serious cases is 1,600. As of May 2003, Bayer had spent $240 million settling 785 Baycol lawsuits. Controversy has surrounded Baycol and the German health minister even criticized the German companys delay at telling patients of the dangers of Baycol, a point that only seemed to strengthen Baycol lawsuit arguments.
