Byetta® Deaths

800-889-3898

Made by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lily, Byetta® is a type-2 diabetes medication that has been the focus of a number of personal injury lawsuits. In fact, while the first Byetta® lawsuit was filed in San Diego in 2008, since then, a number of people who claim they have been injured by Byetta® have been seeking legal recourse for their injuries.

Claims against Byetta® include:

  • acute pancreatitis, a sudden inflammation of the pancreas marked by back pain, abdominal swelling and/or fever
  • chronic pancreatitis, a recurring swelling of the pancreas that causes nausea, vomiting and/or fatty stools (in addition to the symptoms of acute pancreatitis)
  • hemorrhagic pancreatitis, pancreatic swelling characterized by internal bleeding
  • necrotizing pancreatitis, pancreatic inflammation coupled with tissue death
  • severe hypoglycemia, dangerously low blood sugar

Without treatment, these side effects can cause further complications, such as pancreatic cancer, and, eventually, death.

To date, nearly 40 patients have reported developing some type of pancreatitis following use of Byetta® medication. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also received reports of at least six deaths that claim to be linked to Byetta®.

Mild Byetta® Side Effects

Despite the severity of some Byetta® side effects, in most cases, patients may only experience minor, far milder Byetta® side effects that may include:

  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • heartburn
  • irritability
  • nausea
  • sweating

How to Start a Byetta® Lawsuit

The first step to initiating a Byetta® lawsuit is to set up an initial consultation with a defective drug attorney who specializes in Byetta® cases.

To encourage injured patients to stand up for their legal rights and pursue the settlements they deserve, most Byetta® lawyers provide these consultations for free and will delay payment for their services until a settlement is reached.

During the initial meeting, affected individuals can:

  • Find out if they have a legal claim against Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lily.
  • Learn more about the process of filing and winning a Byetta® lawsuit.
  • Get information about Byetta® settlements in lawsuits similar to their own.
  • Decide whether they want to file an individual Byetta® lawsuit or join a class action case (based on their unique needs and situations).

By working with a Byetta® attorney, plaintiffs will benefit from:

  • Access to a network of experts who will testify, when needed in legal proceedings, to verify a plaintiff's claims
  • Professional representation in court, mediation and/or arbitration proceedings
  • Greater chances of winning higher settlements amounts, as studies show that working with experienced lawyers makes it more likely that plaintiffs will win higher amounts of compensation.
