Byetta® Warnings

800-889-3898

Byetta® warnings regarding potential side effects have changed twice already since the introduction of this Type 2 diabetes treatment in 2005. The most serious Byetta® warnings concern the a potential risk of pancreatitis, a severe inflammation of the pancreas. Other Byetta® warnings regard matters such as:

  • Patients who should not use Byetta®
  • The dangers of drug interactions with Byetta®
  • The potential adverse events due to Byetta® treatment, and much more.

Pages of Byetta® Warnings Accompany Each Package

In fact, the packaging that accompanies Byetta® injection pens has very lengthy, extensive and detailed Byetta® warnings and precautions section. Byetta® is to be prescribed only as an adjunctive treatment for Type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients who are also taking other specific diabetes drugs. Some of the additional Byetta® warnings are:

  • Byetta® is not a substitute for insulin.
  • It's not a treatment for Type 1 diabetes.
  • Byetta® might not be effective in some patients.
  • Hypoglycemia (abnormally low blood sugar level) is a potential side effect.
  • For pregnant women, Byetta® is an option only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • It's not known whether Byetta® passes through a mother's milk during breastfeeding.
  • Byetta's® effects on children are not known.
  • Interactions of Byetta® with drugs such as lovastatin, lisinopril, acetaminophen and warfarin may be dangerous.

Byetta® Warnings about Pancreatitis

Perhaps the most serious of the Byetta® warnings is the statement about pancreatitis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required the marketers of the Byetta® drug — Amylin and Eli Lilly Co. — to "upgrade" the Byetta® warning about the risk of pancreatitis that accompanies treatment with this product. The most recent upgrade of the pancreatitis/Byetta® warning took place in the fall of 2008; this followed reports of deaths due to pancreatitis among Byetta® users.
