Although the pharmaceutical company Pfizer markets Chantix as a safe and effective smoking-cessation aid, there appear to be a number of very severe potential side effects of Chantix: depression, mood swings, erratic behavior, suicidal ideation (i.e., thoughts of suicide), and suicide attempts.
Chantix-Induced Depression
Many cases of Chantix-induced depression and other behavior changes were reported to the MedWatch service of the FDA since the introduction of Chantix to the U.S. market in August 2006. The FDA responded by conducting an Ongoing Safety Review of Chantix (generic name, varenicline).
A Public Health Advisory Regarding Chantix and Depression, Etc.
Eventually the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory about the dangers of Chantix. In a February 2008 statement, the FDA stated that Chantix users had reported experiencing “neuropsychiatric symptoms” such as:
• Changes in behavior
• Agitation
• Depressed mood
• Suicidal ideation (thoughts)
• Attempted/completed suicide
Pfizer Denies Chantix–Depression Link
Regarding the issue of Chantix and depression, Pfizer has contended that depression is more common among individuals who are trying to quit smoking and those who are smokers in the first place, compared to the general population. Pfizer has indicated that the number of reports of Chantix-related depression and other adverse behavior changes is minimal.
Compensation for Losses Due to Chantix
Depression is not a side effect that one would expect from taking a medicine to help quit smoking. Chantix induces depression in some people, and those who suffer losses due to severe depression may have a legal right to compensation for their losses.
Individuals with clinical depression may find it impossible to keep working at their job; they may lose interest in their loved ones and in taking care of themselves. Worsening depression can be accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and despair. Chantix treatment has been reported to have led to thoughts of suicide in some depressed patients, and to successful suicide attempts in others.
