Chantix® Deaths

800-889-3898

Chantix® deaths may occur as a result of suicide and/or violent behavior associated with the drug. Although the FDA has not specified a number of Chantix® deaths, the agency continues to investigate the safety issues surrounding Chantix®, a prescription-only smoking cessation medication.

The First Publicized Chantix®-related Death
The potential for Chantix® deaths came to light in 2007 when a well known Dallas musician was fatally shot after breaking down a neighbor’s door. He was reportedly experiencing the agitation, mood swings, and hallucinations that have been experienced by other Chantix® users, especially those who consumed alcohol sometime during the 12-week course of Chantix® treatment.

A Warning about Chantix® and Suicide
The musician’s apparent Chantix®-caused death prompted the FDA to issue an Early Warning about the unexpected side effects of this drug:

  • suicidal ideation (thoughts of committing suicide)
  • suicidal behavior
  • agitation / nervousness
  • mood swings
  • unexplained behavior
  • depression
  • impairment of the ability to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery

Traffic Accidents and Chantix®
In May 2008, a Los Angeles Times article stated that more than 24 traffic accidents had been linked to Chantix® use, as reported to the FDA. Some Chantix® deaths may be the result of driving impairment; if your family has lost a member in a traffic accident and you suspect that Chantix® use was involved, contact a Chantix® plaintiffs’ attorney to discuss your case.

Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, and Chantix®
In the spring of 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also banned the use of Chantix® among U.S. pilots and air traffic controllers, apparently out of concern that Chantix®-related deaths and injuries could be caused by personnel suffering Chantix® side effects.

Talk to a Law Firm about Chantix® Deaths
If you’ve been harmed by Chantix® use, or if your family member suffered a Chantix®-related death, contact a defective drugs law firm and discuss your circumstances. An attorney will explain your legal rights and options regarding your losses.
