Chantix® Accidents
(800) 889-3898
Chantix®, a Pfizer-made smoking cessation pill, is known to increase patients' risk of experiencing blackouts and seizures. These possible Chantix® side effects can be extremely dangerous, particularly if they occur while patients are driving, operating heavy machinery or performing some other attention-demanding task.
Tragically, the occurrence of blackouts and seizures has led to a number of injuries and Chantix® accidents.
FDA Warnings Regarding Chantix® Accidents
Following mounting reports of Chantix® accidents and other side effects, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a national Chantix® warning that:
- Alerted the public about the life-threatening side effects associated with Chantix® use.
- Mandated that Pfizer include a "black box" warning on Chantix® labels (Black box warnings are the most serious FDA labeling, as they highlight the fact a drug can cause fatal health complications).
Despite these Chantix® warnings, however, many patients have experienced (and others will continue to experience) injuries and Chantix® accidents. It's vital that these injured Chantix® patients:
- Seek emergency medical attention to prevent further complications and, in the most serious cases, death.
- Discontinue use of Chantix® immediately and talk to their doctor about an alternative method for quitting smoking.
- Meet with a Chantix® lawyer, once their health is stable, to learn more about their legal rights and find out if they are entitled to compensation for their Chantix® injuries.
Reports of Chantix® Injuries
According to a study conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), over 1,000 Chantix® patients reported developing severe Chantix® side effects within the first quarter of 2008 alone. However, experts estimate that, only about 1 to 10 percent of Chantix® patients file reports of their injuries, so approximately 10,000 people have been seriously injured after taking Chantix®.
These estimates exceeded the number of negative reports for any drug in the U.S. during that time frame.
Along with seizures and blackouts, other serious Chantix® side effects can include:
- Depression
- Psychosis and/hallucinations
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)
- Suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors
- Toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome (TENS)
- Vision problems
Chantix® Accidents Trigger FAA Ban
Given the prevalence and severity of Chantix® side effects, in May 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned pilots and air traffic controllers from taking Chantix®.
What to do After a Chantix® Accident
Injured individuals should set up a free initial consultation with a Chantix® lawyer. During this meeting, prospective plaintiffs (which include injured Chantix® patients and families of deceased Chantix® users) can:
- Find out if they have a legal claim against Pfizer.
- Learn more about the process of compiling and winning a Chantix® lawsuit.
- Get information about settlements in cases similar to their own.
- Evaluate whether they want to file an individual Chantix® lawsuit or join an already-progressing class action lawsuit (based on their individual needs and situations).
