Chantix Falls

800-889-3898

A Chantix fall is the term used to describe an accident that an individual has following a Chantix treatment. First introduced in August 2006, Chantix is a smoking cessation pill that prevents the brain from experiencing the pleasurable effects of nicotine. Yet, despite it's effectiveness in helping people quit smoking, Chantix has been found to increase patients' chances of developing:

  • blackouts
  • depression
  • psychosis and/or hallucinations
  • seizures
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome (TENS)
  • vision problems

While any of these Chantix side effects can cause serious injury (and, possibly, death), blackouts, seizures and vision impairment can be especially dangerous when patients are:

  • driving
  • operating heavy machinery
  • performing any task that demands focus, attention and/or physical exertion

To date, over 75 patients have reported experiencing serious injuries following Chantix falls. It's crucial that these individuals, along with any Chantix patient who experiences a severe side effect:

  • Get emergency medical care following a Chantix fall
  • Stop taking Chantix and find an alternative medication or method for smoking cessation
  • Meet with a Chantix lawyer, following recovery, to learn more about their legal rights and find out if they are entitled to compensation for their Chantix injuries

Chantix Falls Spark FDA Warnings, Other Bans

According to a study conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), over 1,000 (and up to 10,000) patients developed severe Chantix side effects during the first quarter of 2008. These estimates exceeded negative reports for any other medication in the U.S. during that period of time.

Given prevalence and severity of Chantix falls and injuries, in May 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a nationwide Chantix alert that:

  • Made the public aware of the range of possible Chantix side effects
  • Required Pfizer to include "black box" warnings on Chantix labels (Black box warnings, the most serious level of FDA warnings, indicate a drug has the potential of causing life-threatening side effects).

In that same month, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also issued a Chantix alert, banning pilots and air traffic controllers from taking this drug.

Chantix bans don't stop here, however. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has also advised that Chantix users be banned from obtaining commercial driver's licenses (which allow people to drive buses, large trucks and/or tractor-trailers).

What to do After a Chantix Fall

Injured patients, as well as families of deceased Chantix users, should set up a free initial consultation with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in Chantix lawsuits.

In addition to evaluating their legal claim(s), prospective plaintiffs can also:

  • Find out more about the process of building and winning Chantix lawsuits.
  • Get information about past trials and settlements regarding cases similar to their own
  • Determine whether they want to file an individual lawsuit or join a class-action case, depending on their individual needs and situations
