Crestor Safety

Is Crestor, a newer, stronger statin used to lower cholesterol, safe? In early 2005 the FDA issued a public health advisory regarding Crestor safety. After further testing in which serious side effects occurred, the government agency deemed it necessary to warn the public about further risks involved with Crestor.

The drug now must carry a label that contains new information and new recommended levels of dosing for patients at a higher risk for developing muscle damage. These persons include Asian patients, and people with liver or kidney damage history.

The new warnings on Crestor safety follow stronger FDA involvement in drug information after new deaths and warnings were given about other drugs such as Vioxx. The first Vioxx settlement was for hundreds of millions of dollars. The FDA is now producing more warnings as more safety issues arise with drugs such as Crestor.

Crestor has been related to the disease rhabdomyolysis, a muscle damaging condition that can be fatal if left untreated. As the muscles decay they release substances like creatine or potassium into the blood in large quantities. These substances overload the filtering capabilities of the kidney, which may cause severe kidney failure and death.

In June of 2004, the FDA was watching Crestor and asked doctors to be more wary in prescribing the drug due to safety concerns. In January of 2005 a 39-year old woman died from complications arising from rhabdomyolysis. She was taking Crestor for her cholesterol.

Safety should be your concern when taking Crestor. Patients more at risk for muscle injury include Asians and Asian Americans, people taking cyclosporine, or people with severe kidney or liver failure or damage.

The history of Crestor is fraught with problems. The FDA delayed approval of the drug for a whole year because of safety concerns about kidney disease. Some five months after the drug was on the market, patients prescribed Crestor developed severe kidney and liver problems associated with their treatments.

Because of concerns about Crestor safety, the public is taking a closer look at side effects they may have, especially ones that could develop into serious conditions. If you or someone you know has suffered side effects or death from Crestor then your first step should be to contact a certified and experienced lawyer for advice and counsel.
