Cytosol Product Side Effects
Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) products manufactured by Cytosol Laboratories, Inc. are subject to a recall by the Food and Drug Administration after reports indicated serious Cytosol product side effects.
What are BSS products?Balanced salt solution products were developed for use by health professionals to keep a patient's eyes, ears, nose, and throat moistened during surgery. Approximately one million BSS products were distributed between 2003 and 2004 putting millions of patients at risk for serious Cytosol product side effects.
What are some Cytosol product side effects?Reports indicated that BSS products contain a high level of endotoxins, a substance produced in certain bacteria that cause a number of Cytosol product side effects including:
Fever
Shock
Changes in blood pressure
Circulatory problems
Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (a severe and possibly irreversible eye injury)
The FDA also received more than 300 injury complaints from patients who used BSS Cytosol products.
Which BSS products are being recalled?Three labels manufactured by Cytosol Laboratories, Inc. are subject to recall including:
- AMO Endosol, distributed by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.
- Cytosol Ophthalmics, distributed by Cytosol Ophthalmics
- Akorn, distributed by Akorn, Inc.
