Dexamethasone was intended to treat organ system inflammation. The drug is a steroid medicine and dexamethasone is sometimes given to premature infants because it was thought that the dexamethasone could prevent chronic lung disease. It was later found that instead of helping premature infants, dexamethasone wears through intestinal tract lining.
The dexamethasone side effects found to occur are serious conditions. Dexamethasone is also linked to adverse effects such as ulcers. When dexamethasone is used for chronic treatment, many dexamethasone side effects can occur because of the adrenal suppression it leads to.
Since adrenal glands produce the bodys necessary hormones and some steroids, dexamethasone can interfere with this process, inhibiting childrens growth. Dexamethasone suppresses the bodys inflammatory response and often allows infection to occur as a result.
