Digitek Deaths

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received many reports of life-threatening illnesses and adverse medical events linked to Digitek, and several possible Digitek deaths are under investigation.

Recalled Digitek May Have Caused Deaths
The manufacturer of Digitek, Actavis Totowa LLC, recalled all of the tablet-form Digitek on the market in the U.S. in April 2008, with the cooperation of the FDA. The recall was prompted by a manufacturing mistake that resulted in Digitek tablets with twice the dose of the active ingredient, digoxin.

Since then, Actavis has been hit with a flurry of lawsuits regarding their recalled Digitek, with some of the legal actions alleging that Digitek has resulted in deaths and severe side effects. Several federal lawsuits have been filed in New Jersey, including a case alleging a Digitek-caused death. Other states in which legal action has been taken are Michigan, Alabama, and California.

Digoxin Toxicity
Digitek deaths are typically due to digoxin’s high toxicity. Even a slight increase in the amount of digoxin in a Digitek tablet can mean the difference between a safe dose and a fatal dose. The plants from which digoxin is derived, Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis lanata, are themselves very poisonous.

Digitek Overdose Symptoms
Some patients have been taking Digitek pills for years; others have only recently been prescribed this medication for conditions such as heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm, or other cardiac problems. Everyone who is now taking Digitek or has a family member whose Digitek treatment might have caused his or her death should be aware of the symptoms of Digitek (digoxin) overdose:

  • cardiac instability — too-slow, too-fast, or irregular heart rate
  • hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • nausea, dizziness, or vomiting

These are among the many potential side effects of Digitek. If you are not sure whether your symptoms or those of your loved one indicate an overdose of digoxin, ask your physician about Digitek’s risks.
