Dangerous Digitek side effects have been reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prompting a recall of all dosages of the pill form of this digitalis medication. The Digitek side effects were severe, unexpected and in some cases, life-threatening. Although Digitek is given as a prescription medicine to patients with cardiac problems, one of the worst of the Digitek side effects reported is cardiac instability, which can be fatal.

Side Effects Listed on the Digitek Label
The Digitek side effects at issue are different and generally more serious than the side effects described in Digitek’s required labeling, which include:

  • confusion and mental disturbances
  • intestinal ischemia
  • dizziness
  • breast enlargement in males
  • headache
  • abdominal pain
  • weakness
  • anorexia/lack of appetite
  • visual disturbances
  • thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
  • hemorrhagic necrosis of the intestines
  • diarrhea
  • maculopapular rash (areas on the skin covered with small bumps)
  • nausea and vomiting

Double-Strength Digitek’s Side Effects
The April 25, 2008 voluntary recall of the pill form of Digitek was nationwide. The FDA categorized this recall as Class I, meaning that the FDA considers the defective Digitek as being capable of causing serious illness or death.

The reason for the recall was a manufacturing mistake. Some of the Digitek was made with twice the correct level of the active ingredient, digoxin. The toxicity risk of digoxin is very high; even a slightly higher dosage than intended can do harm to a patient, and a double dose to an unsuspecting patient can have grave consequences. The defective Digitek side effects described in the FDA recall are:

  • cardiac instability
  • bradycardia (an abnormally slow heart beat)
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • low blood pressure (hypotension)
