Digitek is a digitalis medication prescribed to treat congestive heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, and other cardiac problems. As a brand name registered by a pharmaceutical company (Actavis), Digitek® is just one of the digitalis medicines available to patients in the U.S.
From Digitalis
Digitek’s name is drawn from digitalis, the generic drug that had been used for hundreds of years as an herbal remedy. The Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis lanata flowers (foxglove) provided a crude way to reduce swelling in the human body, especially the swelling that can accompany heart failure. Both Digitek and Lanoxin, another digitalis medicine, are used to make the heart beat more effectively — and when the heart is working correctly, the fluid build-up can be decreased.
Digitek Recall
Although Digitek has been widely used as an effective treatment for heart failure, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and more, all of the tablet form of Digitek on the U.S. market was recalled in late April 2008.
The recalled Digitek may have twice the correct dose of digoxin, its active ingredient. Unfortunately, even a small increase in its dosage can make the difference between an effective dose and a life-threatening dose.
The recalled Digitek was distributed by:
Digitek Damage
A digoxin overdose from Digitek can cause severe symptoms such as cardiac instability, low blood pressure, and vomiting, and many patients have reported experiencing these effects after being treated with Digitek. Over 30 lawsuits and several class actions based on the double-dose Digitek have been initiated.
