Digitek®, generically known as digoxin, is a medication prescribed in the treatment of arrhythmias and congestive heart failure. Although Digitek® medication can be effective at strengthening and stabilizing heartbeat, it's vital that patients:

• Are aware of the serious side effects associated with taking this drug

Proper Digitek® Doses

To safely take Digitek®, patients will need to take the precise amount of the prescription for the exact length of time specified by their doctor. Taking larger Digitek® doses – or taking the right doses for too long – can increase the chances that patients develop life-threatening Digitek® side effects.

A Digitek® pharmacist will also recommend that patients:

• Take their Digitek® prescription with a full glass of water
• Ingest the medication at the same time each day (or as close to the same time as possible)

Should Digitek® patients miss a dose of their medication, they should take the missed dose as soon as they remember. They should not double up on their doses.

In case of a Digitek® overdose, patients will need immediate medical attention to prevent severe Digitek® side effects.

Digitek® Medication Side Effects

The most serious Digitek® side effects include:

• acute psychosis
• delirium
• depression
• hallucinations
• heart block
• seizures
• severe allergic reaction
• worsened arrhythmias

Although most of these complications respond well to treatment, if left untreated, some can be life threatening.

Patients most likely to develop the above Digitek® side effects include those who:

• Have experienced (or currently are surviving) heart attack, kidney disease, thyroid disorder and/or electrolyte imbalances
• Take high doses of Digitek® medication
• Have overdosed on Digitek®
• Accidentally took recalled double-dosed Digitek® tablets (On April 25, 2008, the FDA recalled various lots of Digitek® pills due to the possibility that some contained double doses of the active ingredient)

Following Digitek® Complications

Injured patients should:

• Seek emergency medical care to prevent further health complications
• Work with their doctor to find a suitable alternative to Digitek® heart medication
