On February 18, 2008, an Actavis recall was issued to remove dangerous prescription fentanyl patches from the market. Fourteen lots of the Actavis fentanyl transdermal system are being voluntarily pulled from the shelves of wholesalers and pharmacies. Consumers are warned of the serious potential risks posed by these patches and are advised not continue use of the Actavis recalled patches.
What prompted the Actavis recall?
The Actavis recall was issued because of unacceptably high risks of overdose. This potentially lethal risk of overdose is attributed to a fold-over defect in these patches, which could cause them to leak.
Direct exposure to the fentanyl gel from defective patches can lead to serious adverse health reactions including respiratory depression, which can begin slowly and get progressively more serious, resulting in death in some cases.
Recalled Actavis Patches
The Actavis recall includes patches in varying strengths including 25, 50, 75, and 100 microgram-per-hour release patches. All the patches involved in the Actavis recall have expiration dates between May and August 2009.
These recalled patches are sold exclusively in the United States, bearing both the company’s current name, Actavis South Atlantic LLC, and the company’s former name, Abrika Pharmaceuticals. The Actavis name appears on the outside of the carton and the Abrika appears on the pouches containing the fentanyl patches.
What should I do with my Actavis recalled patches?
If you are in possession of any recalled lots of Actavis fentanyl patches, experts advise that you immediately dispose of them by flushing them down the toilet. Do not handle these possibly defective patches directly, as this can pose threat of exposure to dangerously high doses of the potent painkiller fentanyl.
If anyone should come into direct contact with the gel, experts say to thoroughly rinse the affected skin with large quantities of water (no soap). Contact a physician immediately if overdose is suspected.
