Fen phen

Fen phens withdrawal from the market was controversial because of the serious adverse effects associated to the drug. Fen phen has been associated to deadly instances of valvular heart disease, primary pulmonary hypertension, and endocardial fibrosis. Recalled in September 1997, an estimated 6-7 million Americans used fenphen. The fen phen company American Home Products, failed to disclose fenphen information that could have prevented deaths and serious health effects caused from fen phen use.

The removal of fen phen from the market was pursued as soon as the FDA approved fen phen. Fen phen patients found that fen phen side effects were being experienced years after even talking the diet drug. PPH, a linked fen phen side effect is especially hard to detect with routine medical exams even when the disease has progressed to a later stage.
