FDA Warnings Regarding Fleet Phospho Soda® Injuries
On December 12, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a national warning regarding the serious dangers associated with using Fleet Phospho Soda®. The FDA's alert warned the public that Fleet Phospho Soda® had been reported to cause:
- acute phosphate nephropathy (a serious kidney impairment that can lead to kidney failure without immediate treatment)
- arrhythmia
- rectal bleeding
- renal (kidney) failure

In addition to highlighting these severe side effects of Fleet Phospho Soda®, the FDA also required that C.B. Fleet:
- include “black box” warnings on all Fleet Phospho Soda® packaging
- develop and maintain a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS)
- provide Fleet Phospho Soda® patients with literature regarding the side effects of this laxative
- conduct further clinical trials to more fully evaluate the injuries associated with Fleet Phospho Soda®
Following this FDA alert, C.B. Fleet voluntarily recalled all over-the-counter Fleet Phospho Soda® products. Consequently, this bowel cleanser is currently only available via a prescription.
