Fleet Phospho Soda® Injuries

800-889-3898

Also referred to as an oral sodium phosphate (OSP), Fleet Phospho Soda® is a bowel cleansing medication prescribed to patients before they undergo a colonoscopy, surgery or x-rays. Fleet Phospho Soda® is produced by C.B. Fleet and, up until December 2008, was available over-the-counter and by prescription.

However, within recent years, Fleet Phospho Soda® has been found to cause some rare but serious injuries, including kidney damage.

Anyone injured after taking Fleet Phospho Soda® will likely have a legal claim against C.B. Fleet and will be entitled to a settlement for their injuries and losses. Injured parties can learn more about their legal rights by meeting with an experienced defective drug attorney for a free initial consultation.

FDA Warnings Regarding Fleet Phospho Soda® Injuries

On December 12, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a national warning regarding the serious dangers associated with using Fleet Phospho Soda®. The FDA's alert warned the public that Fleet Phospho Soda® had been reported to cause:

  • acute phosphate nephropathy (a serious kidney impairment that can lead to kidney failure without immediate treatment)
  • arrhythmia
  • rectal bleeding
  • renal (kidney) failure
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction

In addition to highlighting these severe side effects of Fleet Phospho Soda®, the FDA also required that C.B. Fleet:

  • include “black box” warnings on all Fleet Phospho Soda® packaging
  • develop and maintain a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS)
  • provide Fleet Phospho Soda® patients with literature regarding the side effects of this laxative
  • conduct further clinical trials to more fully evaluate the injuries associated with Fleet Phospho Soda®

Following this FDA alert, C.B. Fleet voluntarily recalled all over-the-counter Fleet Phospho Soda® products. Consequently, this bowel cleanser is currently only available via a prescription.

Risk Factors For Fleet Phospho Soda® Injuries

Patients who are most likely to develop severe injuries after taking Fleet Phospho Soda® include those who are over 55 years old and/or who have a history of:

  • dialysis
  • electrolyte imbalance
  • kidney disease

Similarly, being dehydrated or overdosing on Fleet Phospho Soda® also increases the chances of developing serious side effects.

To Minimize the Risks, It's Essential that Patients:

  • Discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before taking Fleet Phospho Soda®
  • Do NOT take Fleet Phospho Soda® if they have already done so within the past 7 days
