(800) 889-3898

Fleet Phospho Soda®, an oral laxative produced by C.B. Fleet, has been reported to cause a range of rare, yet severe, side effects, including severe kidney damage, a condition known as acute phosphate nephropathy.

What is Acute Phosphate Nephropathy?

Acute phosphate nephropathy is a condition in which phosphate crystals form in the kidneys and significantly impair its function. Without prompt treatment, acute phosphate nephropathy can progress to total renal (kidney) failure and, ultimately, death.

Patients who sustain serious kidney damage after taking Fleet Phospho Soda® will likely be entitled to compensation for their injuries by pursuing a defective drug lawsuit. How Fleet Phospho Soda® is Used

Generically known as an oral sodium phosphate (OSP), Fleet Phospho Soda® is a bowel cleansing medication prescribed to patients before undergoing a colonoscopy, x-ray or surgery. Fleet Phospho Soda® comes in liquid or tablet form and is currently only available via doctor prescription.

When taking Fleet Phospho Soda®, it's important that patients:

  • Use this laxative precisely as directed, as over dosing on the drug can increase the risk of developing severe Fleet Phospho Soda® side effects
  • Do NOT take Fleet Phospho Soda® if they have already done so within the past 7 days
  • Stay hydrated (by drinking at least an 8-ounce glass of clear liquids with each dose), as dehydration also increases the risks of developing severe Fleet Phospho Soda® kidney injury

Instructions for taking Fleet Phospho Soda® will depend on whether patients are ingesting the liquid or pill form of this medication:

  • For liquid Fleet Phospho Soda®, measure the appropriate amount of liquid medication and mix it with 4 oz. of water. To ensure the entire dose is consumed, add a bit more water to the finished glass, swirl it around and drink the remaining liquid.
  • For Fleet Phospho Soda® tablets, take the prescribed amount of pills (between 2 and 4) in 15-minute intervals the night before the medical procedure (for a total of 20 pills). The following morning, take the remaining pills in 15-minute intervals (for a total of 12 tablets).

Risk Factors for Severe Fleet Phospho Side Effects

Patients with the highest risk of developing kidney injury after taking Fleet Phospho Soda® include those who are over 55 years old and/or who have a history of:

  • dialysis
  • electrolyte imbalance
  • kidney disease

Individuals with a history of the following may need dose adjustments or may be instructed not to take Fleet Phospho Soda®:

  • bowel perforation or obstruction
  • drug and/or alcohol addiction
  • eating disorders
  • epilepsy
  • heart disease
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • liver disease
  • stomach surgery

It's essential that patients discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before taking Fleet Phospho Soda®.
