Oral Sodium Phosphates
(800) 889-3898
Oral sodium phosphates (OSPs) are bowel cleansing medications prescribed to patients prior to certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy or surgery. Brand names of popular OSP products include:
- Fleet Phospho Soda®, produced by C.B. Fleet
- OsmoPrep, produced by Salix Pharmaceuticals
- Visicol, produced by Salix Pharmaceuticals
While Fleet Phospho Soda® may come in liquid or tablet form, both OsmoPrep and Visicol are only available in pill form.
Instructions for Using OSP Products
The appropriate manner in which to ingest oral sodium phosphates will depend on:
- the exact type of OSP a patient is prescribed
- a patient's individual medical history
In general, it's important that patients taking OSP products:
- use the medication only as directed
- consume the prescribed dose with an 8-ounce glass of water
- do NOT take an OSP if they have already done so within the past 7 days
- meet with their doctor for all follow up appointments to monitor their health and ensure they haven't developed any severe OSP side effects
Patients may need OSP dose adjustments if they have a history of:
- bowel perforation or obstruction
- drug and/or alcohol addiction
- eating disorders
- epilepsy
- heart disease
- inflammatory bowel disease
- liver disease
- stomach surgery
Patients should NOT take oral sodium phosphates if they have a history of:
- dialysis
- electrolyte imbalance
- kidney disease
OSP Side Effects
In most cases, oral sodium phosphates will cause mild, passing side effects, such as headaches, bloating and nausea.
When serious OSP side effects do arise, they can include:
- acute phosphate nephropathy (a severe form of kidney damage)
- allergic reaction
- arrhythmia
- rectal bleeding
- rectal sores and ulcers
- renal (kidney) failure
- seizures
It's vital that patients who develop serious OSP side effects seek emergency medical attention for optimal chances of recovery.
Legal Help for Oral Sodium Phosphate Injuries
After receiving the appropriate treatments for OSP side effects, injured patients should meet with a defective drug lawyer for a free initial consultation. During this meeting, prospective plaintiffs can learn more about their legal rights and find out if they are entitled to a settlement for their injuries and losses.
To encourage injured parties to seek the settlements they deserve, defective drug attorneys work on contingency – so no payment for legal service will be due until the case is settled. Those who have a viable legal claim and choose to pursue a defective drug OSP lawsuit can ultimately win compensation for their medical bills, ongoing costs of treatment and pain and suffering.
