Numerous Floxin injury reports have been filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Floxin® is the brand name of the generic fluoroquinolone antibiotic ofloxacin, introduced to the American market in 1990 by its manufacturer, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical. Floxin injury cases have included damage to tendons, a side effect that has been shown to be a particular danger of the fluoroquinolones, which include Cipro®, Noroxin® and Levaquin®.
Tendon Injuries from Floxin
It is not yet known how fluoroquinolone antibiotics cause tendon damage, but the relationship between these drugs and tendon injury is clear. Since the 1990s, close to a thousand cases of tendon damage following treatment with fluoroquinolones such as Floxin have been reported to the FDA, and because the number of cases reported to medical authorities is just a fraction of the injuries that occur, it is likely that several thousand people have been injured by Floxin and similar drugs.
Floxin Uses
Floxin is a prescription-only drug, administered for several types of bacterial infections such as:
· pneumonia
· chlamydia
· skin infections
· acute pelvic inflammatory disease
· gonorrhea
· mixed infections of the cervix and urethra
If You've Been Treated with Floxin
If Floxin treatment was prescribed for you or for a member of your family, you might be a little apprehensive at the idea of Floxin's potential to induce a tendon injury. Call your doctor with questions about your treatment, or about any symptoms that might suggest tendon damage, including soreness, sudden pain, or difficulty using a limb or body part.
