Produced by Novartis (a Swiss pharmaceutical manufacturer), Foradil is an inhaled bronchodilator, a medication that can improve breathing by relaxing and opening up the airways. As such, Foradil is typically prescribed for those who suffer from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or emphysema.

However, although Foradil can be effective at preventing the occurrence of asthma attacks and other breathing problems, this medication has been found to increase the severity of such attacks when they do occur. In the worst cases, intensified attacks have been fatal for Foradil users.

Basis for Foradil Lawsuits: Foradil Side Effects

Those who have developed any of the following side effects after using Foradil may have a legal claim against Novartis:

• arrhythmias
• hyperglycemia
• intensified breathing problems (which can include wheezing and choking)
• worsening asthma symptoms

Some asthma attacks following Foradil use are so severe that they are fatal. Loved ones of those who have died after using Foradil will also have a legal claim against Novartis.

FDA Warnings Regarding Foradil

The severity and prevalence of serious Foradil side effects has prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue two nationwide Foradil alerts. These are intended to warn both medical experts and patients about the risks associated with using Foradil:

• In November 2005, the FDA asked Novartis to include stronger warning labels on Foradil's packaging.

• In March 2008, the FDA warned patients that they should only use Foradil as indicated, meaning that patients should only inhale Foradil capsules via the aerolizer device (rather than simply swallowing the capsules themselves).

Unfortunately, despite such Foradil warnings, patients will continue to develop serious Foradil-related injuries. To minimize the risk of potentially fatal Foradil complications, it's vital that patients do the following before they start taking Foradil:

• Discuss their full medical history with their doctors
• Learn about all related Foradil side effects
