Produced by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, Foradil is a long-acting bronchodilator, a medication that helps patients breathe better by relaxing the muscles surrounding their airways.
Along with being an effective treatment for asthma, Foradil can also be used to help control:
• chronic bronchitis, a recurring inflammation of the bronchial airways
• chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD), a condition in which the bronchial tubes are irreversibly constricted and breathing is significantly hindered
• emphysema, a form of COPD that is typically caused by smoking and/or exposure to toxins
• exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB), wheezing and breathing difficulties that develop following physical activity
However, despite its ability to effectively improve breathing, in some cases, Foradil has been reported to cause a range of mild to serious side effects, some of which are life threatening.
Among the serious side effects associated with using Foradil are:
• arrhythmia, particularly those resulting in faster heart rate
• elevated blood pressure
• increased blood sugar
• increased breathing difficulties
• severe allergic reactions (which are generally marked by hives, rashes and facial inflammation)
Any of the above Foradil side effects will require immediate medical treatment to prevent further complications and, in severe cases, death.
Not all Foradil side effects are life-threatening. However, they can still cause patients to experience a significant degree of discomfort and/or pain. Some of the non-fatal Foradil side effects can include:
• chest pain
• cramps
• dry mouth
• fatigue
• headache
• nausea
• sleeping problems
• tremors
While none of these Foradil side effects will permanently damage patients' health, they can dramatically affect a person's quality of life. If any of the above become too overwhelming, patients should consult their doctors and discuss finding an alternative bronchodilator.
Patients who are more likely to develop serious Foradil side effects include those with a history of:
• diabetes
• epilepsy
• heart problems
• hypertension
• severe allergic reactions to other bronchodilators
• thyroid disorders
Such high-risk patients should consider alternatives to Foradil.
Similarly, it's important to note that medical experts are currently unaware of the effects Foradil can have on unborn or nursing infants. Consequently, women who are pregnant, nursing or planning on becoming pregnant should avoid starting a Foradil regimen.
Seek emergency medical treatment and follow through with all necessary follow-up treatments. While the precise course of treatment for Foradil side effects will depend on the type and severity of an individual's condition, treatment options can include:
• blood thinning medications to lower blood pressure
• epinephrine to prevent severe allergic reactions from resulting in potentially fatal anaphylactic shock
• insulin injections to relieve hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)
• intravenous fluids to re-hydrate patients
• oxygen therapy to immediately improve breathing
Once a patient's health has stabilized, it's also important that (s)he meet with a Foradil lawyer to evaluate whether (s)he has a provable legal claim against Novartis. If so, an experienced attorney will help the injured recover compensation by filing a Foradil lawsuit.
Those who have been injured after using Foradil will likely be entitled to compensation for their:
• medical bills
• ongoing treatments for irreversible Foradil side effects
• living expenses, should Foradil side effects prevent patients from being able to earn a living for any period of time
