Foradil Warning

Used to prevent severe breathing problems, Foradil is a type of bronchodilator that is indicated for use in the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and emphysema.

Yet, despite Foradil's ability to ward off asthma attacks and improve breathing, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received numerous patient reports regarding serious injuries and death associated with Foradil use.

The severity of these patient reports has prompted the FDA to issue a few nationwide Foradil warnings:

• In November 2005, the FDA warned that, while Foradil could prevent severe asthma attacks, this medication would worsen the symptoms of attacks when they did occur. With this initial Foradil warning, the FDA also demanded that Novartis (the Swiss pharmaceutical manufacturer of Foradil) include stronger warning labels on the drug's packaging.

• In March 2008, the FDA issued a second Foradil warning, alerting patients that they should not directly swallow Foradil capsules. Instead, these capsules are meant to be inhaled via the device (known as an aerolizer) that comes with the medication.

Other Foradil Warnings: How to Minimize Foradil Side Effects

Along with the FDA's national Foradil warnings, patients considering using this medication should also be aware of the side effects and risk factors associated with Foradil use.

Among serious Foradil side effects are:

• chest pain
• hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels)
• increased heart rate
• severe allergic reactions, which are typically indicated by facial swelling, hives and breathing problems
• worsening asthma symptoms (when attacks to occur)

Those who have the highest risk of developing these serious Foradil side effects include patients with a history of:

• allergies
• diabetes
• epilepsy
• heart problems
• hypertension
• thyroid disorders

Patients who have (or had) any of the above conditions may need to adjust their doses of Foradil and/or consider using another type of bronchodilator.

When Foradil Warnings Fail: Foradil Lawsuits

Although federal regulators and medical experts have issued a variety of Foradil warnings, some patients will still develop serious health problems after using this medication.

For these patients, it's crucial to:

• Seek immediate medical care to prevent further, potentially fatal Foradil complications.
• Start using a safer alternative to Foradil.
• Meet with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in Foradil cases to evaluate whether they have a provable legal claim against Novartis.

To encourage patients affected by Foradil side effects to pursue their cases, most experienced Foradil lawyers offer free consultations and will delay payment for their services until the case is won.

By following through with a Foradil lawsuit, affected patients can win the compensation they deserve. These settlements can help pay for medical bills and living expenses, particularly if Foradil injuries are severe, irreversible and demand long-term treatment.
