Fosamax and Osteonecrosis

On September 24, 2004, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to health care providers linking the use of Fosamax and osteonecrosis development. Fosamax, which belongs to a family of drugs called bisphosphonates, is commonly used to treat cancer of the bone and osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. The evident correlation between Fosamax and osteonecrosis has prompted dentists, endodonists, and other health practitioners to closely monitor patient's health who are taking and have taken Fosamax.

If you or a loved one has developed osteonecrosis caused by Fosamax use, you may be entitled to obtain compensation for your losses and suffering.

Fosamax

Approximately 22.4 million prescriptions are written for Fosamax in the United States annually. Fosamax, made by pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., grosses an average of $3 billion in sales every year. Recent evidence linking Fosamax and osteonecrosis has caused serious concern among consumers and health professionals regarding the safety of the drug.

Fosamax is currently most commonly used for the treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Fosamax and other stronger bisphosphonates may also be used in treating cancer patients whose illness has metastasized to the bone. In advanced stages of cancer, Fosamax may be administered intravenously during chemotherapy.

Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis is a serious and debilitating condition in which the jawbones are unable to heal after trauma. In a patient who is suffering from osteonecrosis, exposed bones following dental trauma or surgery will be unable to recover causing possible infections, fractures, rotting and eventually the death of bone tissue.

Currently in the United States, approximately 20,000 Americans are diagnosed with osteonecrosis annually. A recent study released in the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons has caused heightened concern regarding the relationship between Fosamax and osteonecrosis.

If you are taking Fosamax, it is important to avoid procedures such as tooth extraction or other major dental procedures to avoid the onset of osteonecrosis.

Legal Help is Available
