Gardasil® Side Effects

Gardasil® side effects have been reported in a number of people. The individuals who have been vaccinated with Gardasil® (girls and women as young as nine years old and as old as 26 years old) have done so to prevent several types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections that cause cervical cancer and genital warts. However, Gardasil® injections' side effects are well known to the pharmaceutical company that makes and manufactures this vaccine — Merck & Co.

Side Effects Described on Gardasil® Packaging

Gardasil® is administered as three vaccine injections over a six-month period. The prescribing information for Gardasil® notes the many possible side effects of Gardasil®, including:

  • dizziness
  • fainting
  • fever
  • headache
  • nausea
  • bruising, redness, itching, pain, swelling at the site of injection
  • vomiting

Further Adverse Effects of Gardasil®

The information for patients also includes the following list of possible adverse reactions to Gardasil® (i.e., potential side effects):

  • aching muscles
  • chest pain
  • difficulty breathing
  • generally feeling unwell
  • hives
  • joint pain
  • leg pain
  • muscle weakness
  • rash
  • seizure
  • severe stomach ache
  • shortness of breath
  • swollen glands (armpit, neck, or groin)
  • unusual fatigue or weakness
  • wheezing

Patients are instructed to contact their physicians about these symptoms and any other symptoms "that concern you, even several months after getting the vaccine." Clearly, the benefits of the Gardasil® HPV vaccine are accompanied by a host of potential side effects, some of them quite serious.

Other, More Severe Gardasil® Side Effects

Sources other than Merck & Co. have revealed further, more severe side effects linked to Gardasil®:

  • thromboembolic events (e.g., blood clots, which can travel to the brain or lungs)
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome — a rare, potentially deadly nervous system disorder
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative muscle disease
  • seizures, epilepsy
  • Bell's palsy
  • Paralysis

The U.S. government-managed Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) takes reports of serious side effects to vaccinations (including Gardasil®). VAERS has received hundreds of such reports since this vaccination was introduced to the U.S. market in 2006.
