A study conducted by researchers at the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston found that despite its positive results with cancer patients, Gleevec is not without risk.

Researchers examined the data of 10 patients who developed severe heart failure after taking the popular cancer drug. They found that Gleevec causes deterioration of the left ventricle. Eventually, this deterioration results in weakening of heart tissues and the development of congestive heart failure .

In addition to the risk of congestive heart failure, Gleevec may also have long-term effects on bone structure and functioning. A study published in the May 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found that Gleevec interferes with bone growth and formation.

Other adverse Gleevec side effects include:

  • Eye bleeds
  • Spontaneous rupture of the spleen
