Heparin® Dosage and Administration

The appropriate heparin dosage for a patient will vary according to several factors. For instance, a higher dose will be administered to patients suffering from more severe conditions. Other factors that may contribute to a heparin dose include a patient’s age and overall health.

Heparin® medicine can be administered via:

• Direct injection into the body's veins (It is unsafe to inject heparin drugs into the muscles.)
• IV or catheter lines (This method requires heparin medication to first be injected into the line, after which it is slowly given to a patient in regular, finite amounts)

Heparin® Medication Side Effects

Patients treated with heparin have reported to have suffered from injuries including:

• alopecia, hair loss
• hemorrhage, excessive bleeding
• heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HITS), a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and kills blood platelets (Without treatment, HITS can cause stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and death.)
• hyperkalemia, dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can cause potentially fatal arrhythmias.)
• new or worsening blood clots
• osteoporosis, loss of bone density that increases the susceptibility to fractures
• severe allergic reaction, characterized by rashes, breathing problems and facial or tongue inflammation
