Heparin® Injection

(800) 889-3898

Produced by Baxter Healthcare, heparin is an injectable anti-coagulant drug prescribed to treat:

  • atrial fibrillation, irregular heartbeats
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots stuck in the body's deep veins (especially in the legs) that impede healthy circulation
  • peripheral arterial embolism, blood clots in the large arteries of the arms and/or legs
  • pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening blood clots lodged in the lungs that significantly impede breathing and re-oxygenation of the blood

Depending on the nature and severity of a patient's condition, heparin injections may be administered via:

  • Direct injection into one of the body's veins (Heparin® injection sites can be anywhere that a vein is visible and penetrable)
  • Intravenous drip, in which the heparin is injected into a catheter or IV line and then continuously (or intermittently) given to a patient

Heparin® should never be directly injected into a patient's muscles.

Heparin® Injection Side Effects

Although rare, severe heparin side effects may affect patients, particularly those over 60 years old and/or with a history of:

  • bacterial endocarditis (an infection of the heart lining)
  • bleeding disorders (such as hemophilia)
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • liver disease
  • menstruation disorders
  • recent trauma (injury or surgery) to the brain, eyes and/or spinal cord
  • stomach or intestinal disorders

Possible heparin injection side effects may include:

  • alopecia (hair loss)
  • excessive hemorrhage (bleeding)
  • heparin induced thrombocytopenia (a condition in which the immune system destroys blood platelets. If left untreated, thrombocytopenia can result in stroke, heart attack and death.)
  • hyperkalemia, high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can result in life-threatening arrhythmias.)
  • osteoporosis
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by breathing problems, skin rash and, in the worst cases, anaphylactic shock

Heparin® Injection and Pregnancy

Women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should inform their doctor of their situation before starting a heparin regimen. Whether or not heparin injections during pregnancy are safe will depend on a woman's medical history. Before doctors prescribe a heparin injection, they will weigh out the benefits versus the risk of using this medication.

Women will likely be prescribed a heparin injection while pregnant if they have:

  • a blood clotting disorder (that puts them at a high risk of develop clots)
  • an artificial heart valve

Although being injected with the heparin drug during pregnancy won't directly affect the unborn baby (as this medication can't cross the placenta), prolonged use of heparin can cause mothers to:

  • develop osteoporosis
  • excessively bleed during pregnancy or delivery

To minimize side effects, doctors will closely monitor pregnant women receiving heparin injections.

Heparin® Lawsuits and Monetary Compensation

Patients injured after receiving heparin injections will likely be entitled to compensation for their:

  • funeral and burial costs (should families of deceased heparin patients be pursing a heparin lawsuit)
  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • future living costs (if applicable)
  • permanent disabilities
  • pain and suffering
