Heparin® Lock

(800) 889-3898

Heparin® lock flush solution is a medication that, when injected into an IV line or catheter, helps keep the lines open and promote free flow of blood in the lines. With a heparin lock IV, blood has minimal chances of clotting in IV lines due to the anti-coagulant (anti-clotting) proteins contained in the heparin drug.

This form of heparin is not indicated for the treatment of blood clots in the body and, therefore, should never be injected directly into the body. For optimal results, a heparin lock injection should be regularly administered.

Heparin® Lock IV Uses

One of the primary uses of heparin lock IVs occurs when certain medications need to be administered to pregnant mothers going through a low risk labor.

By establishing immediate access to the vein, heparin lock devices allow doctors to administer any of the following to women in labor:

  • antibiotics
  • pain medications, including Stadol or Demerol (These drugs typically come into play when mothers ask for an epidural, require a C-section and/or experience postpartum hemorrhage)

Complications and Side Effects of Heparin® Lock Devices

Although serious heparin side effects are rarely caused by lock IVs , when they do occur, they may include:

  • black stools
  • dark urine
  • excessive bleeding (particularly from the nose, gums or existing wounds)
  • heavy, prolonged menstrual periods
  • intense headache
  • severe allergic reaction (marked by breathing difficulties, hives and facial or tongue swelling)
  • unusual bruising
  • unusual dizziness

Individuals with the highest risk of developing any of these serious and, in some cases, life-threatening side effects include those with a history of:

  • bleeding disorders
  • high blood pressure
  • kidney disease
  • severe allergies
  • stroke
  • ulcers

Similarly, patients over 60 years old tend to have increased sensitivity to heparin lock flush solutions. Before administering a heparin injection, doctors will evaluate your medical history and decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks in each individual case.

Compensation for Heparin® Lock Complications

Individuals injured after using a heparin lock IV, as well as families of deceased heparin lock patients, will most likely be entitled to compensation for their injuries by pursuing a heparin lawsuit. Heparin® attorneys have experience in successfully representing injured patients and obtaining compensation to cover losses including:

  • funeral and burial costs (should families be pursuing a case on behalf of a deceased heparin patient)
  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • permanent disabilities (if applicable)
  • pain and suffering
