Heparin® Medicine

(800) 889-3898

Primarily made by Baxter Healthcare, heparin medicine is designed to prevent new blood clots from forming. In most cases, heparin medicine is prescribed to treat:

  • atrial fibrillation, irregular heartbeats
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots stuck in the body's deep veins (especially in the legs) that impede healthy circulation
  • peripheral arterial embolism, blood clots in the large arteries of the arms and/or legs
  • pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition in which blood clots lodge in the lungs and significantly impede breathing and re-oxygenation of the blood

How is Heparin® Medicine Administered?

Heparin® medicine may also be administered, either via direct injection into a vein or into an IV or catheter line, to individuals before or after surgery (particularly heart surgeries).

Heparin® injections directly into the muscles are not safe or recommended.

Calculating a Heparin® Medicine Dose

The appropriate heparin dosage for a particular patient will depend on several factors, including:

  • the type of the condition
  • the severity of the condition
  • the patient's unique medical history

Patients with more serious conditions will typically require larger doses of heparin directly injected into their veins.

Heparin® Medicine Side Effects

Heparin® medicine has been linked to a number of serious and, in some cases, life-threatening heparin side effects. To date over 350 patients have reported developing one (or more) of the following after using heparin medication:

  • alopecia, hair loss
  • hemorrhage, excessive bleeding
  • heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HITS), a condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets and destroys blood platelets (If left untreated, HITS can result in stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and death.)
  • hyperkalemia, dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can result in potentially fatal arrhythmias.)
  • osteoporosis, loss of bone density that increases the susceptibility to fractures
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by hives, breathing difficulties and facial or tongue swelling
  • worsening or new blood clots
  • death

Given that some of these heparin side effects are potentially fatal if left untreated, it's vital that affected heparin patients seek emergency medical attention upon developing any of the above complications.

Heparin® Lawyers and Lawsuits

Patients injured after taking heparin medicine, as well as families of deceased heparin patients, will likely be entitled to compensation for their:

  • funeral and burial costs (if applicable)
  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages and earning potential
  • future costs of living (if applicable)
  • permanent disabilities (if applicable)
  • emotional pain and suffering

Affected individuals can find out if they have a case and are entitled to a settlement by meeting with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in heparin lawsuits. During a free initial consultation, heparin lawyers will evaluate prospective plaintiffs' claims and advise them on the best manner of proceeding with their case.
