Heparin® Recall

(800) 889-3898

Heparin® is an injectable anti-coagulant medication prescribed in the treatment of pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation and deep vein thrombosis (along with a number of other conditions).

However, despite its effectiveness, heparin contaminations have caused the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue two separate heparin recalls:

  • In December 2007, the FDA recalled heparin due to possible contamination by the Serratia marcescens bacteria (Infections resulting from this bacteria can have fatal complications).
  • In March 2008, another national FDA heparin recall was issued due to contamination of lots produced in China. In this heparin recall, the drug was "over-sulphated," as Chinese heparin manufacturers were unethically cutting the medication with chondroitin sulfate to cut down on manufacturing costs.

Although each FDA heparin recall took toxic doses of this drug off the market, many were still gravely injured after using recalled heparin. In fact, in January 2008 alone, over 150 patients reported experiencing adverse reactions after using contaminated heparin. To date, the heparin contamination has caused over 80 fatalities.

Anyone injured after taking heparin, as well as families of deceased heparin patients, will likely be entitled to compensation by pursuing a heparin lawsuit.

Heparin® Recall: Symptoms Caused by Contaminated Heparin®

Individuals who take recalled heparin may start developing any combination of:

  • chest pain
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness and/or fainting
  • headache
  • increased heart rate
  • lowered blood pressure
  • redder, paler and/or less sensitive skin
  • restlessness
  • shortness of breath
  • stomach pain
  • facial and/or throat swelling
  • vomiting

Without prompt treatment, some of the above symptoms can be life threatening, particularly if severe allergic reaction causes anaphylactic shock.

Heparin® Recall Lawyers

Given the severe complications associated with taking recalled heparin, injured heparin patients and families of deceased heparin patients are eligible to receive compensation by filing a heparin lawsuit. While settlement amounts will vary according to the type and severity of an individual's heparin side effects, in most cases, plaintiffs can win compensation for their:

  • funeral and burial costs
  • hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • permanent disabilities
  • emotional pain and suffering

Affected individuals can find out if they have a legal claim against Baxter (the maker of heparin) by meeting with an experienced heparin lawyer. To encourage heparin patients to learn more about their legal rights, experienced heparin lawyers offer these consultations for free and work on contingency – so no payment for their services is due until or unless a heparin settlement is won.
