Heparin®ized Saline Solution

(800) 889-3898

Produced by Baxter Healthcare, heparinized saline solution is a medication that is injected into IV or catheter tubes to promote free flow of un-clotted blood through the lines. Unlike other forms of the heparin drug, heparinized saline solution is not safe to inject directly into the body's veins.

Heparin®ized saline solution may also be referred to as heparin drips or heparin lock IVs.

Uses of Heparin®ized Saline Solution

Heparin®ized saline solution and related equipment can be used in the treatment of various conditions, including:

  • atrial fibrillation, a type of arrhythmia
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots in the body's deep veins, particularly in the legs
  • peripherial aterial embolism, blood clots in the arms' and/or legs' arteries
  • pulmonary embolism (PE), potentially fatal blood clots in the lung's airways

Doctors may also use heparinized saline solution when performing certain procedures, including (but not limited to):

  • aterial or cardiac surgeries
  • blood transfusions or extractions (for blood tests)
  • dialysis
  • major abdominal or thoracic surgeries

Heparin®ized Equipment

Depending on the nature and severity of an individual's condition (or the procedure being preformed), healthcare professionals may use any combination of the following heparinized equipment:

  • heparinized blood collection tubes, also known as "heparinized blood tubes"
  • heparinized capillary tubes
  • heparinized syringes

Side Effects of Heparin®ized Saline Solution

Unfortunately, in rare cases, heparinized solution can cause some serious health complications, including:

  • Alopecia, hair loss
  • Excessive hemorrhage (bleeding)
  • Heparin® induced thrombocytopenia (a condition in which the immune system destroys blood platelets. If left untreated, thrombocytopenia can result in stroke, heart attack and death.)
  • Hyperkalemia, high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can result in life-threatening arrhythmias.)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Severe allergic reaction, marked by breathing problems, skin rash and, in the worst cases, anaphylactic shock

While most of these heparin side effects are treatable, if left untreated, some may be life threatening.

Compensation for Heparin® Side Effects

Patients injured after receiving heparinized solution will likely be entitled to compensation if they file a heparin lawsuit. For a thorough evaluation of their case, affected patients can set up a free initial consultation with a personal injury lawyer experienced in heparin lawsuits.

During this meeting, prospective plaintiffs can learn more about the process of compiling and winning a heparin lawsuit. They can also get advice about whether filing an individual case or joining an already-progressing class action case is best for their needs and situation.

As added incentive to encourage heparin patients to stand up for their legal rights, these attorneys work on contingency – so patients won't have to pay for legal fees until or unless they win their case.
