Heparin® Side Effects

(800) 889-3898

Produced by Baxter Healthcare, heparin is an injectable medication used to prevent the formation of blood clots. As such, the heparin drug is typically indicated as an effective treatment for:

  • atrial fibrillation, irregular heartbeats
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots stuck in the body's deep veins (especially in the legs) that impede healthy circulation
  • peripheral arterial embolism, blood clots in the large arteries of the arms and/or legs
  • pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition in which blood clots lodge in the lungs and significantly impede breathing and re-oxygenation of the blood

However, despite its various applications, heparin has been known to cause a range of serious, possibly fatal side effects – particularly in individuals who have taken contaminated heparin or have been subjected to high doses of the drug.

Anyone injured after taking heparin, as well as families of deceased heparin patients, can win compensation for their injuries, medical bills and pain and suffering by pursuing a heparin lawsuit.

Types of Heparin® Side Effects

Among the most severe side effects associated with heparin use are:

  • alopecia, hair loss
  • hemorrhage, excessive bleeding
  • heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), a condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets and destroys blood platelets (If left untreated, HIT can result in stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and death.)
  • hyperkalemia, dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can result in potentially fatal arrhythmias.)
  • osteoporosis, loss of bone density that increases the susceptibility to fractures
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by hives, breathing difficulties and facial or tongue swelling

Patients with the highest risk of developing severe heparin side effects include those over 60 years old and/or individuals with a history of:

  • bacterial endocarditis (an infection of the heart lining)
  • bleeding disorders (such as hemophilia)
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • liver disease
  • menstruation disorders
  • stomach or intestinal disorders

Because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies heparin as a "Class C" medication, pregnant women shouldn't take this drug. To date, the potential side effects in pregnant women are unknown.

Heparin® Attorneys and Lawsuits

Given the range and severity of possible heparin side effects, individuals who develop any of the above-listed health complications after taking the heparin drug can win a settlement to compensate them for their:

  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • permanent disabilities
  • pain and suffering
