Unfractionated Heparin®

(800) 889-3898

Unfractionated heparin is a form of the anti-coagulant medication heparin that is made up of heavier molecules than newer forms of this drug, which are referred to as low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).

Although unfractionated heparin and LMWH are equally effective at preventing blood clots, unfractionated heparin doesn't prevent as many heart attacks as LMWH and causes more complications than LNWH.

Whether unfractionated heparin versus LMWH is most appropriate for a patient will depend on the individual's condition, the severity of his condition and his complete medical history.

Uses: Unfractionated Heparin® Treatment

Unfractionated heparin may be indicated for use in the treatment of:

  • atrial fibrillation
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • peripheral aterial thrombosis
  • pulmonary embolism

Additionally, unfractionated heparin may be administered before and/or after surgery to minimize blood clots that may complicate or develop after a procedure.

Depending on the patient's condition, unfractionated heparin may be administered via direct injection into a patient's vein (a subcutaneous unfractionated heparin injection) or through an IV (meaning the heparin is injected in the line of an IV or catheter and regularly given to a patient in finite amounts).

Unfractionated Heparin® Side Effects

In rare cases, patients can develop severe, possibly life-threatening side effects after taking unfractionated heparin. These complications may include:

  • hair loss
  • excessive bleeding
  • heparin induced thrombocytopenia (a condition in which the immune system destroys blood platelets. If left untreated, thrombocytopenia can result in stroke, heart attack and death.)
  • hyperkalemia, high levels of potassium in the blood (If left untreated, this condition can result in life-threatening arrhythmias.)
  • osteoporosis
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by breathing problems, skin rash and, in the worst cases, anaphylactic shock
  • worsening blood clots, DVT and/or pulmonary embolism

Patients with the greatest risk of developing any of these unfractionated heparin side effects include those over 60 and/or patients with a history of:

  • bacterial endocarditis (an infection of the heart lining)
  • bleeding disorders (such as hemophilia)
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • liver disease
  • menstruation disorders
  • recent trauma (injury or surgery) to the brain, eyes and/or spinal cord
  • stomach or intestinal disorders

Unfractionated Heparin® Injuries and Lawsuits

Patients injured after receiving an unfractionated heparin dose should:

  • Seek immediate medical attention to prevent further health complications and death
  • Follow through with all prescribed treatments to ensure recovery
  • Work with their doctor to find an alternative anti-coagulant medication
  • Meet with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in heparin lawsuits

During an initial consultation with a heparin lawyer, prospective plaintiffs can find out if they have a legal claim and are entitled to compensation for their injuries. Those who qualify can win compensation for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering by pursuing a heparin lawsuit.
