Hydroxycut and Hydroxycut Max

Hydroxycut and Hydroxycut Max products were recalled in early May 2009 by their manufacturer, following the FDA's statement that the agency had received over 20 reports of serious medical events related to Hydroxycut and a death due to Hydroxycut side effects. The FDA recommends that consumers stop using all Hydroxycut and Hydroxycut Max products.

The following Hydroxycut/Hydroxycut Max products were the subject of the May recall by Iovate Health Sciences, Inc.:

2. Hydroxycut Max Liquid Capsules
3. Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
4. Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
5. Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Capsules
6. Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
7. Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
8. Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
9. Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
10. Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
11. Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
12. Hydroxycut 24
13. Hydroxycut Carb Control
14. Hydroxycut Natural

Liver Damage, Death Linked to Hydroxycut

Hydroxycut products — there are roughly 750 different ones described by Iovate as dietary supplements, "fat burners," and "energy enhancers" — are all under suspicion from the FDA. The ingredients of Hydroxycut may be the cause of these products' severe side effects, which have included:

• elevated levels of liver enzymes (indicating potential liver injury)
• liver damage requiring liver transplant
• jaundice — the yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin; caused by accumulating bilirubin in the blood

If you have been using Hydroxycut or Hydroxycut Max for any reason, the FDA suggests that you stop. These products are not FDA-approved, and the quality of their ingredients is not monitored by the FDA or any other drug regulatory agency in the U.S.

Do Hydroxycut and Hydroxycut Max Work?

The question of whether Hydroxycut products work as described by Iovate and distributors such as MuscleTech may never be answered completely — no large-scale outside-source clinical trials have been conducted. Reviews and "testimonials" are available on the Internet (not all of them positive, by any means), but the verity and accuracy of such subjective ratings cannot be assessed.
