Hydroxycut® Ingredients

800-889-3898

Hydroxycut® ingredients are very numerous, often rather exotic, and not always confirmed regarding their safety and effectiveness. They have changed somewhat over the years that Hydroxycut® products have been available; for example, ephedra is no longer a Hydroxycut® ingredient — according to Hydroxycut® manufacturer Iovate Health Sciences, Inc. — because of its severe and even life-threatening Hydroxycut® side effects.

Typical Hydroxycut® Ingredients

Other, common ingredients of Hydroxycut® are caffeine, green tea, gymnema sylvestre, garcinia cambogia, and other herbal extracts. Other typical ingredients include:

  • white tea extract
  • oolong tea extract
  • soy phospholipids
  • rhodiola rosea extract
  • withania somnifera extract
  • chromium picolinate
  • calcium
  • potassium

Some Hydroxycut® products are now specifically caffeine-free, too, since a high level of caffeine can have intense and unpleasant side effects.

Hydroxycut® Ingredients Are Not FDA-Regulated

However, Iovate states that the company makes an amazing number of different Hydroxycut® products (about 750). The products are sold in over 70 countries, and the total number of ingredients is rather difficult to pin down. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been keeping track of Hydroxycut®-related injuries and illnesses for about seven years, but Hydroxycut® products — as "diet supplements," weight-loss pills, and "energy enhancers" are not under FDA regulations.

Hydroxycut® Products Recalled in May 2009

In early May 2009, Iovate (based in Ontario, Canada and Blasdell, New York) voluntarily recalled 14 of its products after the FDA's assessment of 24 cases of liver damage — one case was fatal — linked to Hydroxycut®. The FDA stated that "Although the liver damage appears to be relatively rare, FDA believes consumers should not be exposed to unnecessary risk" and they recommended that U.S. consumers stop using all Hydroxycut® products.

Hydroxycut® distributors such as MuscleTech and chain stores are pulling these products off the shelves. The potential side effects of Hydroxycut® ingredients include:

  • tremors
  • anxiety
  • rapid or irregular heart beat
  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • liver damage
