Recalled on May 1, 2009, Hydroxycut® is a dietary supplement that claims to increase the potential weight loss, when coupled with diet and exercise, up to 4.5 times more than diet and exercise alone.

Hydroxycut® is made by Iovate Health Sciences, Inc. and, prior to its recent Hydroxycut® recall, was one of the top-selling weight loss supplements in the U.S.

The 14 Hydroxycut® products that have been recalled include:

• Hydroxycut® 24
• Hydroxycut® Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
• Hydroxycut® Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
• Hydroxycut® Carb Control
• Hydroxycut® Hardcore Drink Packest (Ignition Stix)
• Hydroxycut® Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
• Hydroxycut® Hardcore Liquid Caplets
• Hydroxycut® Liquid Shoots
• Hydroxycut® Max Aqua Shed
• Hydroxycut® Max Drink Packets
• Hydroxycut® Max Liquid Caplets
• Hydroxycut® Natural
• Hydroxycut® Regular Drink Packets
• Hydroxycut® Regular Rapid Release Caplets.

Anyone using or in possession of these Hydroxycut® products should:

• Immediately discontinue use of Hydroxycut®.
• Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Hydroxycut® Warning Label: Known Side Effects

To date, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received 23 patient reports regarding serious Hydroxycut® side effects, including:

• cardiovascular disorders, such as heart attack and palpitations
• liver damage
• rhabdomyolysis (a rare condition in which muscle deterioration can lead to kidney failure)
• seizures.

One person has died after developing Hydroxycut® liver problems.

To minimize the risk of life-threatening Hydroxycut® side effects, it's vital to:

Hydroxycut® Warnings: Ingredients

Although it was first sold with ephedra, a controversial herb banned in the U.S., Hydroxycut® hasn't been made with ephedra since 2004. Consequently, newer versions of Hydroxycut® contain:

• calcium
• chromium
• gymnema sylvestre (a tropical Indian herb)
• green tea extract
• hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is extracted from tropical fruit and associated with causing liver problems
• hydroxygen plu
• hydroxyTea
• potassium
• soy
• white tea extract.
