Invega (paliperidone) is an antipsychotic medication prescribed to treat schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders in adults and in adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17.

Schizophrenia is a complicated psychiatric disorder. These patients:

  • Have trouble distinguishing reality from what is not real
  • Have problems thinking clearly
  • Have normal emotional responses
  • Act normally in social situations

People with schizoaffective disorder have a psychosis that interferes with their ability to tell what is and is not real. In addition, these patients have mood problems. Some experts believe schizoaffective disorder is the same as schizophrenia.

Like other antipsychotics, Invega changes the way the body's chemicals work in the brain.

Who Should Not Use Invega

In a black box boldface notice, the Invega label emphasizes that older patients with dementia should not take Invega. Studies have shown that the risk of death is greater in this group of people who take Invega. The black box information warns that:

"Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death. INVEGA® is not approved for use in patients with dementia-related psychosis."

Dementia is a group of symptoms resulting from diseases that affect the brain. In these patients, the medication may cause:

  • Heart failure
  • Sudden death
  • Pneumonia in older adults who have conditions related to dementia

Gynecomastia in Boys and Men

Gynecomastia is the development of enlarged breast tissue in men. Invega has been shown in a clinical trial to be linked to this condition when the drug is prescribed to young boys.

A table on the drug label lists the adverse reactions to Invega reported from a fixed-dose, placebo-controlled study of adolescents between 12 and 17 years. The table indicates that 3 percent of 35 patients treated with a daily 12 mg dose of Invega developed gynecomastia.

While gynecomastia is not a life-threatening condition, it can result in serious emotional and physiological issues for young boys and men. Symptoms of gynecomastia include breast tenderness, swelling of the breast tissue and nipple discharge. Sometimes gynecomastia will go away on its own, but in most cases, surgery to remove the breast tissue is necessary.

Other Invega Side-Effects
