Generically referred to as sitagliptin, Januvia® is a prescription pill that is used in the treatment of type-II diabetes, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes (Janumet® is a combination of sitagliptin and metformin). Januvia® is produced and distributed by Merck, and it is NOT safe or appropriate for the treatment of type-I diabetes. It's important to note that Januvia® is intended to be used in conjunction with exercise, dietary chances and, in some cases, other medications. Though it is primarily intended to control blood sugar levels, it may also be used in the treatment of obesity.

Despite such benefits, however, Januvia® may cause some severe, potentially life-threatening side effects, including severe allergic reaction and pancreatitis. To minimize the chances of developing these serious health complications, it's vital that patients discuss their complete medical history with their physicians before starting a course of Januvia®. Additionally, it's crucial that patients understand the side effects and risk factors for the potential side effects because, the earlier these side effects are discovered and treated, the better chances patients have of surviving.

If you believe you’ve been injured as a result of taking Januvia®, you can contact our law firm to find out if you are entitled to compensation for your injuries and losses. Our Januvia injury lawyers welcome you to attend a free, no obligations initial consult to learn more about your legal rights and entitlements.

Side Effects of Januvia ® & Janumet®

In most cases, patients will experience mild, treatable side effects – if they experience any Januvia® side effects at all. These common side effects may include:

  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • nausea
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • stomach pain

Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer

Some patients have reported more serious side effects while taking Januvia®, including pancreatitis. Symptoms of pancreatitis and other more serious condition may include:

  • breathing problems
  • faster heart rate
  • fever
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • severe pain in the upper stomach that also affects the back

Link between Januvia® and pancreatic cancer is also possible as one of the risk factors of pancreatic cancer is pancreatitis. Januvia patients, who begin to develop any of the above symptoms, should seek emergency medical attention.
