Levaquin® Dosage

First approved by the FDA in 1996, Levaquin® is an oral fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is generally prescribed to treat bacterial infections affecting the:

  • bladder and/or urinary tract
  • kidneys
  • lungs (particularly in cases of pneumonia)
  • prostate
  • sinuses
  • skin

Levaquin®, which is generically known as levofloxacin, may also be indicated in the treatment of Chlamydia, bronchitis and anthrax inhalation. PriCara and Othro-McNeil Pharmaceuticals make and distribute Levaquin® in the U.S.

Amounts of Levaquin® Doses

Levaquin® pills come in the following doses:

 

  • 250 mg
  • 500 mg
  • 750 mg.

Alternately, Levaquin® liquid medication is produced at a potency of 25 mg/mL and can range from having a pH of 5.0 to 6.0. While Levaquin® liquid medication may be any color from clear yellow to lucid green, the exact color of the drug doesn’t have a bearing on the potency.

Levaquin® Side Effects

Unfortunately, use of Levaquin® drug is known to cause a range of mild to serious side effects. In most cases, patients will only develop mild, if any, side effects of Levaquin®, some of which include:

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • mild itchiness
  • muscle pain
  • nausea
  • restlessness and/or anxiety
  • sleeping problems (including nightmares or insomnia)

Rarely, however more serious Levaquin® side effects arise and threaten patients’ lives. Severe, potentially fatal side effects of Levaquin® may include:

  • agranulocytosis, a dangerous decrease in white blood cell levels
  • arrhythmias, irregular heartbeat
  • autoimmune hemolytic anemia, in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks red blood cells
  • blood clotting disorders, characterized by swelling and tenderness at the site of the clot
  • dysglemia, a disorder of blood sugar metabolism
  • epilepsy, seizures
  • hepatotoxicity, liver damage marked by dark urine and yellowing of the whites of the eyes
  • peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage marked by tingling, pain or numbness
  • renal toxicity, kidney damage characterized by bloody urine and excessive fatigue
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by hives, skin rash and facial or tongue swelling
  • tendinopathy, an injury or tear affecting the tendon
  • thrombocytopenia, low levels of blood platelets that can cause excessive bleeding
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis, in which the top layers of skin separate from the skin’s internal layers

To date, nearly 800 individuals have reported to the FDA that they have sustained tendon damage following use of Levaquin®. A number of others have died after taking this medication.

Levaquin® Medication Interactions

Some medications, when taken in combination with Levaquin®, may cause negative health complications. Medications known to negative interact with Levaquin® include (but aren’t limited to):

  • antiacids (such as Maalox, Mylanta or Rolaids)
  • insulin or other diabetes medications
  • nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and piroxicam
  • oral steroids, such as betamethasone, prednisolone and prednisone
  • sucralafate, an ulcer medication
  • vitamins or supplements that include iron or zinc
