Levaquin® and Pregnancy

Levaquin® belongs to a group of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones, which are used to fight and treat bacterial infections in a patient’s body. While it is not known if Levaquin® can harm an unborn child, it is classified by the federal Food and Drug Administration under pregnancy category C, which states the following:
Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Pregnancy Risks for Levaquin®
Pregnant women should not use Levaquin® without consulting with their doctors first. Women who become pregnant while taking Levaquin® should tell their doctors immediately. Women who are breast-feeding should not use Levaquin® without telling their doctor, because it can pass into breast milk and possibly harm a nursing baby.
Other Uses of Levaquin®

- the skin
- sinuses
- kidneys
- bladder
- prostate
- bronchitis
- pneumonia
- exposure to anthrax
Side Effects of Levaquin®
While rare, serious, potentially fatal side effects can occur after an overdose or instructed therapeutic use of Levaquin®. Severe side effects may include: dangerous decrease in white blood cell levels, kidney damage, tendon tears, blood clots, liver damages, dangerously low levels of blood platelets and more.
Other Names for Levaquin®
Approved by the FDA in December 1996, Levaquin® is available in tablet and liquid form. Levaquin®’s generic name is levofloxacin. It also is sold under the following brand names:
- Oftaquix, from Kestral Ophthlamics
- Quixin, from Vistakon Pharmaceuticals
- Tavanic, from Sanofi-Aventis
- Levofloxacin, from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical
