Levaquin® Treatment
(800) 889-3898
Levaquin® is the commonly-known brand name for levofloxacin, a powerful quinolone antibiotic marketed by Johnson & Johnson/Ortho-MacNeill Pharmaceutical Companies. Quinolone antibiotics are typically used to treat severe and life-threatening bacterial infections, and have been known to cause severe adverse reactions in patients when compared with more mild antibiotic treatments. Levaquin® has been linked to hundreds of drug interactions and severe side effects, especially in patients over the age of 60 and those that take other specific prescription medications.
What is Levaquin® Used to Treat?
Levaquin® is most commonly used to treat severe bacterial infections, such as those caused by chronic bronchitis on pneumonia. Doctors typically prescribe Levaquin® for infections of the lungs, skin, sinuses, and urinary tract, as well as for some infections caused by sexually transmitted diseases or exposure to bacterial hazards such as anthrax. Because Levaquin® is a synthetic chemotherapy agent, it is typically only used to treat very severe or life-threatening infections.
Alternatives to Levaquin®
Many readily available alternatives to Levaquin® antibiotics have been proven safe and effective for the treatment of severe bacterial infections. Though infections can be treated with another quinolone antibiotic, such as Cipro, many doctors choose to prescribe a less intensive therapy, especially for those patients suffering from non-life threatening infections.
Many severe bacterial infections can be treated safely with brand name or generic medications that contain streptomycin, gentamicin, and doxycycline. These medications can be as effective as Levaquin® in treating bacterial infections, and have not been linked to many of the severe adverse reactions that are common in many patients prescribed a course of quinolone antibiotics.
How an Attorney can Help
Patients who suffer certain injuries after taking Levaquin® antibiotics may be able to recover costs for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Levaquin® is currently the subject of several large class action lawsuits, and has been linked to many cases of tendon rupture and allergic reaction, among other side effects.
An experienced Levaquin® attorney can help you evaluate your legal claim or to provide you with more information on recovering compensation.
